Bulgaria arrests 20-year-old French terrorism suspect

A 20-year-old French citizen suspected of links to terrorists has been arrested by Bulgaria while trying to cross into Turkey via the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint, Bulgarian Interior Minister Roumyana Buchvarova said on September 29.

The suspect entered Bulgaria via the Kalotina border checkpoint from Serbia.

France is expected to issue an international arrest warrant which would open the procedure for the extradition of the suspect.

Buchvarova said that the arrest was the result of good collaboration between France and Bulgaria.

She confirmed that the suspect had been identified at the point he entered Bulgaria at the Kalotina checkpoint.

According to French media reports, the suspect was a Muslim who had become radicalised and had visited websites propagating radical Islamism.

The Interior Ministry declined to say where the suspect was being held, for security reasons.
