Poles protest against proposed abortion ban
Thousands of Poles protested in several cities on April 3 2016 against a possible complete ban on abortion advocated by the Roman Catholic Church and backed by the ruling party Law and Justice (PiS).
Under the present law, abortion is allowed in Poland only if the pregnancy is a result of incest or rape, if it puts the health of the mother at risk or if the foetus is severely damaged.
In a letter read out in churches across the country, Polish bishops called for legislation that would impose the total ban on abortion.
