Doctors leaving Central European countries on the rise

February 17 2011 should have marked a major victory for doctors and healthcare workers: Thanks to the widely publicized “Thank You, We Are Leaving” (Děkujeme, odcházíme) campaign, aimed at achieving better working conditions and higher pay for doctors, that is when the Czech Republic health ministry signed off on a memorandum that reached written compromise between the government and unions seeking change. The agreement promised reforms – in pay increases, education system improvement and anti-corruption measures. According to the chairman of the Czech Doctors’ Unions (LOK) and one of the memorandum’s signers, Martin Engel, however, the fight is far from over, nor is it limited to the Czech Republic.
