EU countries’ ambassadors approve new sanctions targeting 19 Iranian regime officials and entities

European Union member states ambassadors approved on March 11 new sanctions targeting 19 Iranian regime officials and entities responsible for serious human rights violations, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on X.

“As the Iran war continues, the EU will protect its interests and pursue those responsible for domestic repression. It also sends a message to Tehran that Iran’s future cannot be built on repression,” Kallas said.

As The Sofia Globe reported previously, EU foreign ministers decided on January 29 2026 to impose restrictive measures on an additional 15 persons, including a number of Iranian Revolutionary Guard commanders, and six entities responsible for serious human rights violations in Iran, a statement by the Council of the EU said.

The imposition of the sanctions follows the violent repression of peaceful protests, including the use of violence, arbitrary detention, and intimidation tactics by security forces against demonstrators in Iran, the statement said.

In November 2024, EU foreign ministers decided to widen the scope of the EU framework for restrictive measures in view of Iran’s military support to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and to armed groups and entities in the Middle East and the Red Sea region, a statement by the Council of the EU said.

In October 2024, the bloc’s foreign ministers adopted restrictive measures against seven individuals and seven entities following Iran’s missile and drone transfers to Russia.

In May 2024, the Council of the European Union decided to broaden the scope of the EU framework for restrictive measures in view of Iran’s military support of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, a statement by the Council of the EU said.

In April 2024, the European Council strongly condemned Iran’s attack against Israel and announced that there will be new sanctions on Iran, according to a statement on April 18, the second day of a special meeting of the European Council.
