After Trump – Zelenskky clash: ‘Ukraine, be brave, be strong. We stand by you,’ Bulgaria’s PM says
Reacting to the tense televised verbal clash on February 28 between US President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, on one side, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the other, Bulgarian Prime Minister Rossen Zhelyazkov said on the X platform: “Ukraine, be brave, be strong. We stand by you”.
Similarly, Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev said on X: “Ukraine, be brave, be strong! We are all by your side”.
Boiko Borissov, leader of GERB-UDF – the majority partner in Bulgaria’s coalition government and the largest group in Parliament – called for an immediate summit between the US, European countries and allies, at which all points of view would be put on the table.
In a post on Facebook, Borisov said that any attempt to divide Europe makes everyone weaker.
President Roumen Radev, who has opposed support for Ukraine, reacted to Zhelyazkov’s post by saying that the government’s position on Ukraine was a “losing” one.
Radev said that his expectation was that “European leaders will be much more adequate to reality”.
On X, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, in a comment addressed to Zelenskyy: “Your dignity honors the bravery of the Ukrainian people. Be strong, be brave, be fearless. You are never alone, dear President [Zelenskyy]. We will continue working with you for a just and lasting peace”.
EC foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said: “Ukraine is Europe! We stand by Ukraine. We will step up our support to Ukraine so that they can continue to fight back the agressor. Today, it became clear that the free world needs a new leader. It’s up to us, Europeans, to take this challenge”.
Similar messages of support for Zelenskyy came from European Council President Antonio Costa, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, and, as the BBC reported, many other European leaders rallied behind Zelenskky.
The second-largest group in Bulgaria’s Parliament, We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria, expressed full support for Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people “who in the most difficult times defend not only their national interest against the aggressor, but also continue to fight for freedom and peace throughout Europe”.
WCC said that Ukraine’s efforts for peace were efforts for peace on the entire continent.
Movement for Rights and Freedoms – New Beginning leader Delyan Peevski, sanctioned by the US under the Magnitsky Act for large-scale corruption, made a statement siding with Trump.
“Today, more than ever, the world needs peace! And all political leaders must have the courage to defend it , as the American President did,” Peevski said.
