Transport Minister: First two of Bulgaria’s 35 new Alstom trains to enter regular service in September

The first two of a total of 35 new Alstom trains will enter regular operation in early September, Bulgaria’s Transport Minister Georgi Peev said on August 25.

Currently, 12 trains have been delivered to Bulgaria, and the remaining 23 will be ready for delivery by April 2027, Peev said.

Peev said that the Škoda and Alstom engines are the first deliveries of new rolling stock in 20 years.

“With secured financing, we have the opportunity to purchase additional trains, which will accelerate the rolling stock modernisation programme,” he said.

“Our team is working around the clock to ensure that the trains are delivered, tested and certified on time,” Peev said.

“Along with the new trains, we must have good infrastructure and modern safety systems. We are also actively working to increase security on trains. A working group has been established with the participation of the Interior Ministry, which will activate the necessary operational procedures for better interaction between institutions,” he said.

He said that Alstom’s new trains should be used effectively and serve longer routes, including the line to Bourgas.

Andrew deLeone, Europe Region President of Alstom, said: “This train was delivered in record time and is a good example of how the Bulgarian government is taking advantage of the opportunities offered by European funds”

“Each train has six carriages and a capacity of 325 passengers, is 100% air-conditioned and has space for bicycles,” DeLeone said.

He said that maintenance will be carried out in Bulgaria, in a specially built depot, with around 50 Bulgarian engineers and staff taking care of the trains.
