EC approves 6.1 billion euro for Ukraine’s defence
On Ukraine’s August 24 Independence Day, the European Commission (EC) approved 6.1 billion euro in new defence procurement for Ukraine, the EC said.
The EC said that this funding covers air and missile defence systems, missiles, ammunition and radars, reaffirming Europe’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defence and resilience against Russia’s ongoing aggression.
The funding, part of the 90 billion euro Ukraine Support Loan (UASL), comes as Russia escalates attacks with ballistic missiles and drones, the statement said. With 376 missile strikes recorded in July alone, reinforcing Ukraine’s defences has become increasingly urgent, the Commission said.
The August 24 approval adds to 16 billion euro in already approved procurement plans, of which 8.35 billion euro has been paid out, ensuring Ukraine receives critical supplies on time and at the required scale, the EC said.
Most procurements will source products from EU defence companies.
“Given Russia’s intensified use of ballistic missiles and jet-engined drones, the Commission emphasises the need for a significant increase in EU deliveries through destocking, reprioritising orders and ramping up the production.”
Ukraine’s ability to defend itself depends on the rapid availability of critical defence products, the EC said.
The UASL provides 30 billion euro for budgetary aid and 60 billion euro for defence across 2026-2027, including 28.3 billion euro in 2026 to strengthen Ukraine’s defence industrial capacity.
Ukraine can request payments by submitting contracts signed with defence companies.
The Commission will review these contracts before paying out funds to ensure the financial assistance is used for the procurements agreed with EU member states and the Commission, the EC said.
