Bulgaria’s January 2025 has been driest January since 2021
January 2025 in Bulgaria was the country’s the driest January since 2021, the national meteorological bureau said in a provisional report on January 31.
Precipitation in the course of the month ranged from three to 80 per cent of the monthly norm, the report said.
In Bulgaria’s capital city Sofia, monthly precipitation was 42 per cent of the norm.
Average monthly temperatures in Bulgaria in the first month of 2025 ranged from 0 to seven degrees Celsius, about 0.4 to five degrees above the norm.
January 2025 was warmer than January 2024, but colder than January 2023, the report said.
The highest measured temperature was 23 °C on January 28 in Veliko Turnovo. The lowest minimum temperature measured at weather a station in a settlement was minus 15.5 °C on January 5 in Samokov, and the lowest temperature measured on a mountain peak was minus 16.3 °C on Botev Peak on January 15.
In Sofia, the highest measured temperature was 13.7 °C on January 10, and the lowest – minus 7.6 °C on January 5.
During most of the month, the water levels of the rivers in the country were around and below the thresholds for medium waters and around the thresholds for low waters.
As a result of snowmelt on January 5–10 and 21–26, increases in river levels were registered throughout the country.
