December 2024 in Bulgaria: Wettest since 2015, warmest since 2019

December 2024 in Bulgaria has been the country’s month of December with the most precipitation since 2015 and the warmest since 2019, the national meteorological agency said in a provisional report.

Average monthly temperatures were between two and eight degrees Celsius (°C), deviating from the monthly norm by between plus one and plus four degrees.

The highest measured temperature was 21.1 °C on December 17 in Vidin.

The lowest minimum temperature at a weather station in a settlement was minus 12.5 °C on December 29 in Samokov, and the lowest temperature measured on a mountain peak was minus 16.1 °C on Musala Peak on December 16.

In Bulgaria’s capital city Sofia, the highest measured temperature was 12.7 °C on December 17, and the lowest, minus 4.8 °C on December 23.

Monthly precipitation was close to and above the climatic norm, by between 115 and 440 per cent.

The highest measured 24-hour precipitation is 93mm of rain in the village of Kosti, Bourgas district, on December 27.

In Sofia, the monthly precipitation was 75mm, which is 185 per cent of the norm, and the maximum 24-hour precipitation was 8mm of snow on December 1.

On December 25 and 26, heavy snowfall in Western and Central Northern Bulgaria made it difficult to travel through the mountain passes.

Trees were broken because of the heavy wet snow, and electricity was cut off in many settlements in the mountainous and semi-mountainous regions of the country.

From December 24 to 27, prolonged very strong wind in the areas north of Varna and south of Bourgas resulted in rough waves.

During most of December, the water levels of the rivers in Bulgaria were below the thresholds for medium waters and around the thresholds for low waters.

As a result of precipitation in the first 20 days of the month, short-term increases in river levels were recorded at individual measuring points, more significant in the Arda River catchment and in the catchments of the West Aegean Sea basin.

From December 24 to 27, as a result of precipitation, significant increases in river levels were recorded in the Danube, Black Sea and East Aegean Sea basins.
