Eurobarometer: 68% of Bulgarians oppose EU financing purchase and supply of arms to Ukraine
Sixty-eight per cent of Bulgarians oppose the European Union financing of the purchase and supply of military equipment to Ukraine, according to the Eurobarometer Autumn 2024 standard poll.
This means that Bulgarian opposition has risen, given that the Eurobarometer poll done in April 2024 found that 62 per cent of Bulgarians opposed the EU financing of the purchase and supply of military equipment to Ukraine.
The new poll found that 26 per cent of Bulgarians were in favour and six per cent undecided, while the April poll had found that 32 per cent were in favour, with six per cent undecided.
Bulgarian attitudes were again in contrast to the EU average. Across the EU, 58 per cent were in favour of the bloc providing military aid to Ukraine, 37 against, with five per cent undecided.
The Autumn 2024 poll found that 49 per cent of Bulgarians opposed EU financial support for Ukraine and 46 approved, while across the EU, 68 per cent were in favour and 29 per cent against.
Forty-five per cent of Bulgarians opposed the EU imposing economic sanctions on the Russian government, companies and individuals, narrowly ahead of the 44 per cent in favour, with 11 per cent undecided.
This was in stark contrast to EU-wide opinion, with 71 per cent backing sanctions on Russia, 24 per cent against and five per cent undecided.
Seventy-five per cent of Bulgarians supported the EU providing humanitarian assistance to people affected by the war, lower than the 87 per cent EU average.
Bulgarians were evenly split on the EU granting membership candidacy to Ukraine, with 44 per cent in favour, 44 per cent against and 12 per cent undecided. Across the EU, 60 per cent were in favour, 34 per cent against and six per cent undecided.
The poll was done via 1019 interviews from October 11 to November 1, Eurostat said.
