Early results in Macedonia elections prove inconclusive

Both the incumbent VMRO-DPMNE and opposition Social Democrats announced they were victorious in Macedonia’s election on Sunday.

The Macedonian State Election Commission said the conservative VMRO-DPMNE party won 37.98 percent of the vote and the Social Democrats won 36.74 percent of the vote with almost 99 percent of polling stations reporting. 67 percent of registered voters participated in Sunday’s election, one of the highest turnouts in recent national elections in Macedonia. A final result is expected at about midday on Monday.
