Bulgarian Orthodox Church to elect new Metropolitan of Rousse in March

The election of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church’s new Metropolitan of Rousse, to succeed Neofit who became the church’s Patriarch in February 2013, is to be held in March 2014.

Neofit has held on to the diocese long after the three-month period prescribed in church rules for the election of a new metropolitan.

The candidates to be the new Rousse Metropolitan will be decided on March 16. The Holy Synod, the church’s governing body, will make its final selection on March 23.

The Holy Synod, at a meeting on February 18, appointed Dorostol Metropolitan Ambrosii to oversee the election of the Rousse Metropolitan.

In the past year, there have been a number of personnel changes in the Holy Synod, including the election of new metropolitans of Varna, Western and Central Europe and of Nevrokop.
