Eurostat: 86.1% of Bulgarians own their own home

In 2025, a total of 86.1 per cent of Bulgarians owned their own home, according to figures posted by European Union statistics agency Eurostat.

The percentage has been largely unchanged since Eurostat data for home ownership in Bulgaria have been available.

In 2005, the figure was 85.4 per cent, with minor variations in the ensuing two decades.

In 2024, the most recent year for which data are available for all EU countries, Bulgaria ranked in sixth place.

In that year, more than two-thirds (68 per cent) of the population living in EU households owned their home, slightly down from 69 per cent in 2023. The remaining 32 per cent lived in rented housing, up from 31 per cent in the previous year.

The highest share of ownership was observed in Romania (94 per cent), followed by Slovakia (93 per cent) and Hungary (92 per cent).

Eurostat said that owning a home was more common in all EU countries, except for Germany, where renting predominated with 53 per cent of the population being tenants. Germany was followed by Austria (46 per cent) and Denmark (39 per cent).
