Bulgaria’s road death toll in first half of 2026 is 219

A total of 219 people died in accidents on Bulgaria’s roads in the first half of 2026, 32 more than at the same time last year, the Interior Ministry said on July 1, citing provisional data.

Between January 1 and June 30 2026, there were 3032 accidents on Bulgaria’s roads in which people died or were injured.

Apart from the dead, 3759 people were seriously injured.

In June 2026 alone, there were 697 serious accidents, in which 48 died and 877 were injured.

As The Sofia Globe reported previously, Bulgaria is among five European Union countries on track to meet the target of reducing the annual number of deaths in road accidents by 50 per cent by 2030, but in 2025 had the highest road death rate in the EU, according to preliminary data posted by the European Commission (EC) on March 24.
