Bulgarian Navy destroys drone found near Sveti Ivan island

A Bulgarian Navy specialist team carried out a reconnaissance and destruction task of an unmanned aerial vehicle, spotted on August 27 on the northern pier opposite the island of Sveti Ivan, which lies off the coast of Sozopol, the Defence Ministry said on August 28.

The team acted following a request from the district governor of Bourgas district, a positive resolution of the Chief of Defence and by order of the commander of the Navy.

For security reasons, the drone was destroyed on site, strictly observing safety measures, the Defence Ministry said.

There have been numerous incidents of drones or drone parts being found along Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast in recent weeks and months.

Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov, speaking on August 26, said that most the drones that had been found on Bulgaria’s coast in recent weeks were Russian, and none was hazardous. However, the public is urged, on spotting a drone, not to approach it but to immediately alert the authorities by phoning emergency number 112.
