Bulgaria’s June 2026 was slightly warmer and less rainier than the norm

The average temperature in Bulgaria in June 2026 was 1.2 degrees Celsius above the climatic norm and the average rain was about 20 per cent below the norm for the month, the national meteorological bureau said in a provisional report.

The month of June 2026 was similar to the month of June 2016, the report said.

In terms of temperature, it is significantly cooler than June 2024 and 2025, and the measured average precipitation exceeds those of the past two years.

The average monthly temperatures at weather stations in populated areas were between 17 and 25 degrees, deviating from the monthly norm by between minus 1.3 and plus 2.5 degrees C.

The highest measured temperature was 38.9 degrees on June 29 in Svishtov. The lowest minimum temperature at a weather station in a populated area was six degrees in Samokov on June 1, and the lowest temperature measured on a mountain peak is minus 2.5 degrees on Musala Peak on June 13.

In Sofia, the highest measured temperature was 33 degrees on June 29, and the lowest, nine degrees on June 14.

In the last two days of the month, the heat wave reached Bulgaria. Temperatures rose further, in some places up to 38–39 degrees.

In the first half of June, the majority of the monitored rivers in the country had water levels around and above the average water thresholds and around the high water thresholds. After June 16, river levels gradually decreased, with water levels in the Black Sea basin being around and below the average water thresholds, and since June 21, river water levels in most of the country have been around and below the average water thresholds and around the low water thresholds.

At the end of the first week of the month, there were intense rainfall and hailstorms in the northeastern regions, causing serious damage to agricultural crops. In the municipalities of Razgrad and Turgovishte, a significant part of the strawberry and raspberry harvest was destroyed.
