EU leaders welcome Magyar’s victory in Hungary’s parliamentary elections

The presidents of the European Council, European Commission and European Parliament have all welcomed the victory of Péter Magyar’s Tisza in Hungary’s April 12 parliamentary elections, which saw resounding defeat for long-time prime minister Viktor Orbán.

The BBC reported that preliminary election results, based on more than 98 per cent of counted votes, put Magyar’s Tisza party on course for an extraordinary 138 seats, with Orbán’s Fidesz on 55 and the far-right Our Homeland on six.

European Council President António Costa, in a message on X, said: “Record turnout shows the democratic spirit of the Hungarian people. They have spoken—and their will is clear. I look forward to working closely with (Péter Magyar) to make Europe stronger and more prosperous”.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on X: “Today, Europe is Hungarian. We are stronger. More united. To the people of Hungary – you’ve done it again. You have spoken. You have chosen Europe. It’s a victory for fundamental freedoms”.

European Parliamentary President Roberta Metsola congratulated Magya, saying: “Hungary’s place is at the heart of Europe”.
