Four hundred foreigners who have temporary protection in Bulgaria to study at state universities

Four hundred foreign citizens who received the status of temporary protection in Bulgaria will study in Bulgarian state universities in the new academic year, the government information service said on September 27, reporting the outcome of the day’s meeting of the caretaker cabinet.

The students will be accepted in the first year of full-time study in 44 professional fields in 25 higher education institutions in Bulgaria.

They will have the right to a stipend, dormitories and will pay fees according to the rules for Bulgarian students.

In this way, students with temporary protection who have completed secondary education in Bulgaria are also given the opportunity to continue their education in Bulgarian universities, the statement said.

The language of tuition will be Bulgarian. In the first year at the university, they will go through specialised training in language preparation, organised by the departments of the universities.

In line with a European Commission directive in 2022, Bulgaria has extended temporary protection to those fleeing Russia’s war on Ukraine. This is in parallel to other provisions of temporary protection under international and EU law.
