Eurostat: Bulgaria among top 5 EU countries with largest growth in overnight stays in Q2 2024

According to the latest Eurostat data, Bulgaria ranks among the five leading countries in the European Union in terms of growth in tourist overnight stays for the period April-June 2024, compared with the same period in 2023, the Tourism Ministry said on September 18.

“This significant success confirms our country as a preferred destination for both domestic and and for international tourists,” the ministry said.

In the second quarter of 2024 in Bulgaria, 2 126 950 tourist registrations in categorized accommodation were reported, which led to nearly six million overnight stays.

“This places Bulgaria among the leading five countries in the EU in terms of growth of overnight stays with a significant jump of 6.3 per cent compared with the same period of 2023, according to the data published so far,” the statement said.

The first place is occupied by Luxembourg with growth of 22.2 per cent, followed by Malta with 12.3 per cent, Latvia 6.4 per cent, and Poland 3.9 per cent, according to Eurostat.

The total number of overnight stays in accommodation in the EU for the period April-June 2024 amounts to around 780 million, with 51 per cent of them resulting from domestic tourism and 49 per cent from inbound tourism.

“In Bulgaria, this balance shows a dominant role of inbound tourism with 55 per cent, which highlights the growing interest of foreign visitors to the country,” the Tourism Ministry said.

Bulgaria is also ahead of 16 EU countries in terms of overnight stays by foreign tourists in June 2024, which is further proof of the dynamic development of the tourism sector in the country, the ministry said.

“Eurostat data confirm the positive trend in Bulgaria’s tourism sector, as the country continues to attract more and more tourists and asserts itself as a competitive destination within the EU,” it said.
