Bulgaria records 2.5% annual inflation in June

Bulgaria’s annual consumer price index (CPI) recorded 2.5 per cent inflation in June, up from 2.3 per cent a month earlier, the National Statistical Institute (NSI) said on July 15.

It was the first increase in the year-on-year inflation figure after a streak of 20 months in which the annual CPI recorded a decline or remained unchanged.

The monthly CPI figure recorded a decrease of 0.2 per cent, making it the third straight month of deflation, NSI said.

Food and non-food prices were both 0.5 per cent lower compared to May, while services prices were 0.4 per cent higher.

Compared to June 2023, food prices were 1.5 per cent higher, while non-food and services prices rose by 1.4 per cent and 4.5 per cent, respectively.

The harmonised CPI figure, calculated by NSI for comparison with European Union data, recorded an increase of 0.2 per cent compared to May, while the annual harmonised CPI inflation was 2.8 per cent, up from 2.7 per cent a month earlier.

Food and beverage prices were 1.6 per cent higher in June, on an annual basis, while the price of utilities and housing rose by 3.5 per cent and transportation costs were 3.9 per cent up compared to the same month of last year. The three categories account for 49.2 per cent of the harmonised CPI basket.
