Bulgarian-led international military exercise Thracian Viper 2024 begins on July 16
The Bulgarian-led international military exercise Thracian Viper 2024, involving air forces from several nations, begins on July 16 and continues until August 9, according to a statement by the Defence Ministry.
The exercise will involve Bulgarian Air Force aircraft, the air forces of Greece and Romania, the US Air Force in Europe and the Nato multinational battle group based in Bulgaria.
The Bulgarian Air Force participation involves Su-25 and MiG-29 aircraft, air defence systems, Cougar and Mi-24 helicopters.
USAF Europe is participating with six F-16s from the 31st Fighter Wing from Aviano Air Force Base, Italy.
Up to three C-130 transport aircraft will fly up to 200 military personnel who will be stationed at Bezmer air base.
US aircrews will perform aviation support tasks with inert munitions at the Elena air force range. The guidance will be carried out by forward guidance officers from the multinational battle group.
The Greek Air Force will participate with up to four F-16 aircraft, and Romanian Air Force with up to two F-16s. All will operate in Bulgarian air space, without landing in the country’s territory.
On July 18 and 19, reconnaissance flights will be conducted, as well as flights to perform direct aviation support tasks by aircrews from the United States Air Force.
