Sofia Pride parade postponed after deadly Varna floods

Organisers of the Sofia Pride parade said on June 20 that this year’s event, scheduled for June 21, would be postponed because of the deadly flooding that hit the north-eastern part of the country, killing at least 13 people.

“We call on the Bulgarian public to show solidarity and participate in the donation drives to help the people affected by the disaster,” the organisers said in a statement on the Sofia Pride website.

The new date of the parade is expected to be announced next week, the organisers said.

Last year, the Sofia Pride parade was also postponed, to September, so as not to coincide with large-scale anti-government daily protests that swept through Sofia for most of the months of June and July.

The Sofia Pride parade is one on a calendar of such events in various places around the world, with June traditionally being marked as Pride Month.
