Romania rejects rumoured conscription plan amid tensions in Ukraine

The Romanian defence ministry has dismissed rumours that a process is underway of mobilisation of reservists or recruitment of young men amid growing instability in neighbouring Ukraine, after a series of speculations in the media.

The ministry said that an official document that some media had quoted when referring to the so-called mobilisation or recruitment process merely stipulates the necessity for an improved medical certificate young men about to go through the recruitment-conscription process have to present to military medics. This recruitment-conscription process covers all high-school age young men and it merely consists of registering them. Romania abolished mandatory military service in 2006, two years after it joined Nato.
