SMS payment for ‘Blue Zone’ parking starts in Bulgaria’s Plovdiv

A system of payment by mobile phone text message for parking in the “Blue Zone” in Bulgaria’s second city of Plovdiv took effect on September 3 2012.

The fee for SMS payment is 1.20 leva (about 60 euro cents) for an hour. Eighty-five per cent of this goes to municipal coffers and the rest to the mobile operator.

The “Blue Zone” operates from 8.30am to 5.30pm from Mondays to Fridays.

Street signs about the Blue Zone parking were put up some days in advance, leading some motorists to send SMSes to pay when they did not have to.Plovdivdeputy mayor Alexander Darzhikov said that these text messages did not work and the motorists would not have the fee deducted from their accounts.

The number to which SMSes should be sent is 1332.
