Bulgaria’s political parties continue calls to go to early parliamentary elections

Bulgarian opposition pro-Russian party Vuzrazhdane and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms – New Beginning, which is led by Magnitsky Act-sanctioned Delyan Peevski and is de facto part of the ruling majority, on December 16 became the latest to underline calls for early parliamentary elections.

This happened as head of state President Roumen Radev continued consultations with parliamentary groups following the resignation of the government and ahead of the process of Radev handing over mandates to seek to form a new government.

Like current governing mandate holder Boiko Borissov’s GERB-UDF and opposition We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria, whom Radev met the day before, the two parties he held talks with December 16 do not expect a government to be formed in the current National Assembly.

The talks between the Vuzrazhdane delegation headed by party leader Kostadin Kostadinov saw Kostadinov deliver lengthy remarks, dwelling mainly on his preoccupation against Bulgaria’s adoption of the euro, which is to happen as of January 1.

Kostadinov, speaking to reporters after the talks with Radev, said that the President had said that the early elections could be held at the end of March 2026.

MRF – New Beginning delegation head Yordan Tsonev told Radev that recent events “have clearly shown that this Parliament has ended its political life”.

Radev is due to meet ruling majority minority partners the Bulgarian Socialist Party – United Left and populist ITN on December 17, in the course of completing talks with all nine parliamentary groups.
