Bulgaria’s March 2025 was one of the country’s warmest March months in past 25 years

March 2025 in Bulgaria was similarly warm to March 2024 and was one of the country’s five warmest March months since the beginning of this century, the national meteorological bureau said in a regular monthly report.

The average monthly temperatures in March 25 were between plus seven and plus 12 degrees Celsius, between two and five degrees above the monthly norm, the report said.

The highest measured temperature was 30.6 degrees on March 15 in the town of Pavlikeni in the Veliko Turnovo district.

The lowest minimum temperature at a weather station in a settlement was minus 9.8 degrees on March 20 in the town of Chepelare, Smolyan district, and the lowest temperature measured on a mountain peak was minus 19.1 degrees on Mount Musala on March 19.

In Sofia, the highest measured temperature was 27.1 degrees on March 15, and the lowest,. minus 5.4 degrees on March 20.

In most of the country, the amounts of precipitation in March 2025 were around the climatic norm, by about 50 to 150 per cent, the report said.

In terms of precipitation, this month of March was similar to the months of March of the past two years – 2023 and 2024, it said.

During most of March, the water levels of the rivers in the country were around and below the average water levels.

In the periods of March 2–3 and 17–18, as a result of precipitation, more significant increases in the river levels of the southern Black Sea rivers were registered.

Significant increases were recorded in the second period in the catchments of the Ropotamo River (up to +186 cm), the Fakiyska River (up to +136 cm) and the Veleka River (up to +83 cm), but there was no release of water from the river beds.

In the period of March 27–31, as a result of precipitation, there were increases in the river levels throughout the country, more significant in the catchments of the Struma River and the Mesta River, and the water levels of the rivers were around and above the average water levels.
