Bulgaria to pay Easter bonuses to pensioners below poverty line

Bulgaria’s Cabinet approved on April 2 the payment of Easter bonuses to close to 700 000 pensioners living below the poverty line, Prime Minister Rossen Zhelyazkov said.

The intention to pay the Easter bonuses was announced in recent weeks by Labour and Social Policey Minister Borislav Gutsanov and Finance Minister Temenuzhka Petkova.

Petkova said in late March that each pensioner receiving the bonus would get 50 leva (about 25 euro).

Zhelyazkov said that the payment would add up to close to 35 million leva from the state social security budget.

“In spite of all the ill-intentioned comments, I want to assure our compatriots that this is a sign of empathy that not the government, not the state, but Bulgarian society is making so that the great Easter holidays can be celebrated,” Zhelyazkov.

In 2025, Easter is from April 18 to 21, and this year, the dates are the same for Protestants and Roman Catholics and the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.
