Bulgarian political leaders congratulate Trump
Bulgarian head of state President Roumen Radev has stated congratulations to Donald Trump as the Republican candidate appeared certain of victory in the United States presidential elections.
Polls showed Trump at 266 votes in the electoral college, within reach of the 270 needed to win, with Democratic Party candidate Vice President Kamala Harris at 219.
In a message on X, Radev said: “ I am confident that our effective dialogue at the highest level will continue in the interest of the strategic partnership between Bulgaria and the USA”.
Boiko Borissov, the former prime minister whose centre-right GERB-UDF coalition won the largest share of votes in Bulgaria’s latest early parliamentary elections, said in a message on Facebook in Bulgarian: “Congratulations to Donald J Trump. I am ready to work together again! For security!”
The Facebook post was accompanied by a photograph of Borissov and Trump in the White House.
A message in English on Borissov’s X account congratulated Trump “on the decisive victory” and said: “USA is a strategic partner of BG and the EU. I look forward to cooperating with @realDonaldTrump again”.
We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria’s Nikolai Denkov, a former prime minister, said on Facebook that “American citizens have spoken”.
“Donald Trump will be the next president of the US with a landslide victory – congratulations!” Denkov said.
“For us, this means that we must work even harder to strengthen the security and increase the competitiveness of Bulgaria and Europe, with our own efforts,” he said.
WCC-DB’s Kiril Petkov, also a former PM, did not mention Trump by name in his Facebook post, saying: “I congratulate all my friends from the Republican Party on the success of the elections.
“Winning majorities in the Senate and Congress and a looming victory in the presidential race is a serious political achievement,” Petkov said.
Factually, the US Congress is bicameral, composed of the House of Representatives and the Senate.
“Just a month ago, I was invited to Washington to meet with Mike Pompeo and we discussed in depth the important political and economic factors affecting our region. As a former Secretary of State and a key figure in the new Trump administration, his experience and knowledge of international relations will be fundamental to US policy in the next four years,” Petkov said.
“Of course, the fate of Bulgaria depends above all on the Bulgarians, but good cooperation with the US is important for the positioning of our country in the changing geopolitical reality,” he said.
On Facebook, Delyan Peevski – of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms – New Beginning coalition and who since June 2021 has been subject to Magnitsky Act sanctions for corruption – said: “The return of President Donald Trump to the White House is good news for democracy in the United States and the world, which need normality, a new beginning, peace and prosperity.”
Congratulations also came from Kostadin Kostadinov, leader of the pro-Kremlin party Vuzrazhdane, saying that Trump’s victory meant that “the world can really breathe a sigh of relief”.
There were also congratulations from some of the Bulgarian Parliament’s smallest groups, such as the Bulgarian Socialist Party and cable television presenter Slavi Trifonov’s populist party ITN.
