Bulgarian Air Force Academy gets first VR training system

The Georgi Benkovski Bulgarian Air Force Academy has received the first of its kind virtual reality system for training aviation specialists, the Defence Ministry said on October 16.

The acquisition is part of a project to create a centre for the training of flight and technical personnel for the F-16 Block 70 aircraft as part of the industrial co-operation programme with the fighter jet’s manufacturer Lockheed Martin.

“With this system, the Air Force Academy becomes one of the pioneers in the use of virtual reality for the training of aviation specialists and the only one in Europe at the moment with training opportunities for the F-16 Block 70 aircraft,” Bulgaria’s Defence Ministry said.

The industrial co-operation programme was signed in 2019. It was ratified by the National Assembly together with the F-16 Block 70 acquisition contracts.

Delivery of the first F-16s for the Bulgarian Air Force is scheduled to begin in 2025.
