Roberta Metsola re-elected as European Parliament President
Maltese centre-right politician Roberta Metsola was re-elected as European Parliament President by a large majority at its first sitting on July 16.
In the 720-seat European Parliament, 623 ballots were cast, meaning that 312 were needed for the absolute majority required for a candidate to win at the first round.
Voting was by secret ballot.
Metsola, of the European People’s Party, got 562 votes, soundly defeating Spanish leftist rival Irene Montero, who 61.
Metsola will serve a second two-and-a-half year term, after first having been elected European Parliament President in January 2022.
Following the election, the European Parliament was to elect its vice-presidents.
