Polish President, European Council President appeal for restraint in ongoing EU’s debate on Poland
Poland’s President Andrzej Duda and the President of the European Council Donald Tusk received praise from politicians of governing party Law and Justice (PiS) and opposition party Civic Platform (PO) for “speaking in a single voice” and promoting an unbiased, fact-based and non-emotional assessment of the situation in Poland, PiS and PO politicians said following the Monday Duda-Tusk meeting in Brussels.
During a joint press conference Duda and Tusk urged calm after the European Commission launched an unprecedented probe into whether the key legal changes in Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal and public media meet the bloc’s standards on rule of law.
Tusk said he was not “enthusiastic” about the Commission’s move, adding however that it gave a chance to “relieve the bad emotions around Poland”.
