Bulgarian government decrees four extra long weekends in 2016

The Bulgarian government has decreed four additional days off in 2016 to create four long weekends around scheduled public holidays – but also has decreed four Saturdays as working days to compensate.

Bulgaria’s national day is March 3, which in 2016 is on a Thursday. The cabinet has declared Friday March 4 a day off. To compensate, Saturday March 12 will be a working day.

The Day of Bulgarian Education and Culture, May 24, is on a Tuesday, and Monday May 23 has been declared a day off. To compensate, Saturday May 14 will be a working day.

There will be two long weekends in September, but also two Saturdays declared as working days.

Unification Day, September 6, in 2016 is on a Tuesday. Monday September 5 will be a day off, with Saturday September 10 a working day to compensate.

Independence Day, September 22, is on a Thursday and Friday September 23 will be a day off, with Saturday September 17 declared a working day.

The government said that it had decided that in all cases, the special working days would be in the same month as the days off, so that the number of working days in a month would not change.
