App tries to drive down prices in the taxi business

While Prague’s trams, buses and metro services tend to be well-regarded, the city’s taxis do not have the best reputation.

Tour guides warn unsuspecting visitors that drivers have a habit of taking longer than they need to reach their destination in order to charge a higher fare.

Rudolf Belec says his new mobile phone application, Taxi Club, could help solve these types of problems for passengers. The system, which began operating in Prague late last year and won the Best Mobile Application prize in December at the AppParade awards, allows users to order a taxi for below the usual fare from a vetted company using an iPhone or an Android mobile device.
