Russian reprisal risk in gas deal: Gas destined for Ukraine to flow from the west through Hungary

Gas from German utilities company RWE will transit to Ukraine through Hungary from January 1 2013, Ukraine energy minister Yuriy Boyko announced on television last Friday. The gas deliveries of about one million cubic metres a day already started transiting through Poland on November 1 and will continue to do so until the end of the year.

The deal, for about five billion cubic metres, is part of Ukraine’s efforts to wean itself off Russian gas, on which it is highly dependent but which it considers too costly. The country will only import 26 billion cubic metres of gas from Russia in 2012, Boyko announced, less than the originally planned 27 billion cubic metres and than the 40 billion imported in 2011
