New US ambassador Ries presenting credentials to President on October 1
Marcie Ries, Washington’s new envoy in Sofia, was scheduled to present her credentials to Bulgarian President Rossen Plevneliev on October 1 2012.
Ries is a senior US foreign service officer with 34 years of experience in Europe, the Caribbean and the Middle East, the US embassy said. A specialist in national security and political-military matters, she has worked on UN and Nato issues, strategic arms control, as well as bilateral relations with Western Europe, the Balkans and Iraq.
Most recently, Ries was principal deputy assistant secretary in the state department’s bureau of arms control, verification and compliance. In connection with that assignment, she served as the deputy head of delegation for the negotiation of the New START strategic arms reduction treaty with the Russian Federation.
Ries is married to Ambassador (ret.) Charles Ries, whose career included having been ambassador to Greece, and has a son, Alexander, and a daughter, Meredith.
