EU team probes fears for democracy in Hungary

An eight-member delegation from the European Union’s Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee met Hungarian ministry officials, parliamentary parties, non-government organisations and experts from Monday to Wednesday to discuss recent changes in Hungarian legislation.

The head of the delegation, MEP Juan Fernando López Aguilar, told a news conference on Wednesday that its visit aimed to assess whether recent legislation is in line with EU norms, following the European Commission’s concerns that the new Constitution introduced in January and other legal changes fall short of European democratic standards.
