Eurostat: Bulgaria had highest annual increase in fuel price in EU in June 2026
In June 2026, Bulgaria had the highest increase on an annual basis of the price of fuel among European Union countries, EU statistics agency Eurostat said on July 22.
The price of fuel in Bulgaria in June 2026 was 26 per cent higher than in June 2025, Eurostat said.
Eurostat’s statistics on fuel prices come against the background of the February 2026 start of the US-Israeli attacks on Iran.
In June 2026, the price of fuels and lubricants for personal transport in the EU increased by 13.7 per cent compared with June 2025, Eurostat said.
This followed a 20.8 per cent rise in April 2026 and a 20.7 per cent rise in May, compared with the same months in 2025.
In all EU countries, fuels and lubricants prices kept rising in June 2026, compared with June 2025, but at a slower pace than in May 2026, when four countries registered annual inflation rates for this category above 30 per cent.
In June 2026, compared with June 2025, the highest increases were recorded in Bulgaria (26 per cent), Lithuania (23.5 per cent), Romania (23.1 per cent), Finland (22 per cent) and Luxembourg (20.7 per cent). The lowest increases were recorded in Hungary (2.3 per cent) and Poland (5.8 per cent), while in the remaining countries, rises ranged from 7.9 per cent in Spain to 18.6 per cent in Cyprus.
On a monthly basis, in June 2026, EU consumers saw diesel prices decrease by 6.4 per cent and petrol by 4.2 per cent compared with May 2026, Eurostat said.
In May 2026, diesel had dropped by 5.8 per cent, while petrol had registered a slight increase of 0.8 per cent relative to April 2026.
Between May and June 2026, diesel prices decreased in all EU countries. The highest decreases were in Czechia (-11.3 per cent), Poland (-9.7 per cent) and Bulgaria (-9.4 per cent), while the lowest were in Hungary (-0.6 per cent), Italy (-1.4 per cent) and Slovenia (-1.6 per cent).
When it comes to petrol prices, Cyprus (0.7 per cent) and Italy (0.5 per cent) were the only EU countries registering increases between May and June 2026. The remaining countries recorded decreases, the largest in Sweden (-7.8 per cent), Belgium (-7 per cent) and Poland (-6.6 per cent), Eurostat said.
