Remembrance Sunday 2026 observed in Bulgaria’s Plovdiv
As is traditional, a Remembrance Sunday service was held at the Commonwealth War Graves cemetery in Bulgaria’s city of Plovdiv on November 8.
Remembrance Sunday, held annually on the Sunday closest to Remembrance Day on November 11, commemorates and honours the dead in the wars of the 20th century. The November 11 date arises from the anniversary of the Armistice at the close of the First World War.
In Plovdiv, the service was led by British ambassador Nathaniel Copsey and Father Patrick Irwin, and attended by military veterans from Britain and the Commonwealth, as well as members of the public.
The Lesson was read by Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Walker, and 10-year-old Charles Copsey delivered the Exhortation:
“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,
We will remember them.”
