Bulgaria utilities regulator raises gas prices by 5.1% for April

Bulgaria’s utilities regulator has approved a 5.1 per cent increase in the regulated gas price in the country for the month of April, setting the new price at 34.27 euro a MWh, excluding transportation costs, excise and value-added tax.

The Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (EWRC) said that despite the sharp hike, the price of natural gas in Bulgaria was among the lowest in Europe and about 20 euro lower than the reference prices reached in recent days on the TTF gas hub in the Netherlands, which serves as the main European price benchmark.

The regulator said that the April 2026 price was also about 10.7 per cent lower than in the same month of last year, when EWRC approved a price of 38.39 euro a MWh.

Bulgaria’s gas prices were lower than the European average mainly due to the long-term supply agreement with Azerbaijan, the main source of natural gas imports in the country.

Deliveries under that contract are price-linked to oil prices, rather than the international gas prices, which saw a larger increase in in March due to the disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The rest of Bulgaria’s domestic gas consumption will be covered by liquefied natural gas deliveries, which state-owned gas company Bulgargaz contracted from suppliers in previous months, EWRC said.
