Special drone show to be held over Sofia as Bulgaria joins the euro

As midnight brings January 1 2026, the first minutes of Bulgaria’s membership of the euro zone will be celebrated with a special drone show in the sky above Knyaz Alexander I Battenberg Square in capital city Sofia, the Finance Ministry said in a Facebook post on December 31.

The Finance Ministry said that everyone would have the opportunity to become part of the celebration not only on site, but also via live streams on the information campaign website evroto.bg and via the za evroto Facebook page.

The drone show will take place “under favourable weather conditions,” the ministry said.

On December 31, Sofia municipality is hosting a festive New Year’s concert at Knyaz Alexander I Battenberg Square, starting at 9.30pm and featuring several well-known Bulgarian performers.

Sofia municipality said on its website that at midnight, there would not be fireworks, but a special light show.

The municipality called on the public not to set off fireworks both during the concert and in the city as a whole.

Access to the square will be via various checkpoints, and people carrying firearms, fireworks and other dangerous objects will not be admitted. The use of drones by the public is also prohibited, the municipality said.

Police, in uniform and plainclothes, will be duty to keep order, and 10 teams from the emergency services will be on site.

Sofia municipality said that on New Year’s Eve, the metro underground railway, trams and buses will be operate, until 4.30am on January 1.

Bulgaria’s city of Plovdiv is hosting a festive programme on Stefan Stambolov Square, beginning at 10pm and featuring various performers, closing at 2am.

The seaside city of Varna is holding a festive concert, on Nezavisimost Square at 10pm and continuing until 2am.

The municipality of Varna is providing free public transport on eight routes from 10pm until about 3am.

In Bourgas, the festive programme begins on Troikata Square at 10.30pm.

The municipality said that 3000 pieces of banitsa with kismeti – fortune tags – will be distributed on Troikata Square and a glass of red wine will await those who decide to welcome the New Year 2026 on the square. At midnight, there will be traditional horo – a group circular dance – followed by a DJ show.
