Bulgaria’s road death toll in January – July 2026 is 269

A total of 269 people died in accidents on Bulgaria’s road between January 1 and July 31, the Interior Ministry said on August 1, citing provisional data.

Bulgaria’s road death toll in the first seven months of 2026 is 36 higher than over the same period last year, the Interior Ministry said.

In January – July 2026, there were 3770 accidents in which people died or were seriously injured. Apart from the dead, 4694 people were seriously injured.

In July alone, there were 738 road accidents in which people died or were seriously injured, with 51 dead and 933 seriously injured.

As The Sofia Globe reported previously, Bulgaria is among five European Union countries on track to meet the target of reducing the annual number of deaths in road accidents by 50 per cent by 2030, but in 2025 had the highest road death rate in the EU, according to preliminary data posted by the European Commission (EC) on March 24.
