Bulgaria utilities regulator raises gas prices by 5.0% for May
Bulgaria’s utilities regulator has approved a 5.0 per cent increase in the regulated gas price in the country for the month of May, setting the new price at 35.98 euro a MWh, excluding transportation costs, excise and value-added tax.
The Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (EWRC) said that despite the increase, the price of natural gas in Bulgaria remained “favourable to household and business consumers” and about 10 euro a MWh lower than the reference prices on the TTF gas hub in the Netherlands, which serves as the main European price benchmark.
The regulator did not provide a year-on-year comparison. In May 2025, EWRC cut the regulated gas price by 14.2 per cent and set a price of 64.4 leva, or 32.93 euro, a MWh.
Once again, the EWRC attributed Bulgaria’s lower natural gas prices to the long-term supply agreement with Azerbaijan, the main source of natural gas imports in the country, which is linked to international oil prices rather than gas prices.
However, it cautioned that the price of gas under that agreement is due to be updated in July, which will take into account the higher oil prices due to the disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The rest of Bulgaria’s domestic gas consumption in May will be covered by liquefied natural gas deliveries, which state-owned gas company Bulgargaz contracted from suppliers in previous months, as well as gas from the Chiren storage facility, EWRC said.
