Interior Ministry: Bulgaria implementing EU Entry/Exit System at all land borders
The European Union’s Entry/Exit System (EES) is being implemented at all of Bulgaria’s land borders as of January 6, the Interior Ministry said.
As of 10am on January 6, the system is being applied:
On the Bulgarian-Turkish border, at the Kapitan Andreevo, Lesovo and “Malko Turnovo” border checkpoints;
On the Bulgarian-Serbian border, at the Strezimirovtsi, Bregovo and Vrashka Chuka border checkpoints; and
On the Bulgarian-North Macedonian border, at the Gyueshevo, Stanke Lisichkovo and Zlatarevo border checkpoints.
The operation of the EES continues at the Kalotina border checkpoint and at all external air, river and sea borders, where the system was initially implemented on October 12 2025, the Interior Ministry said.
The EES records the data of citizens of non-EU countries travelling for a short stay (up to 90 days in any 180-day period) when crossing the external borders of the EU member states. Border checks on persons covered by the system include the collection of biographical information and the taking of biometric data at the border crossing point (photograph and fingerprints).
The purpose of the EES is to help prevent illegal immigration and to increase security in the Schengen area, the Interior Ministry said.
