Ukraine signs with Greece on supply to natural gas to Ukraine during winter, via countries including Bulgaria
Ukraine and Greece have signed a letter of intent on the supply of natural gas to Ukraine during winter, according to a November 16 statement by the Ukrainian President’s Office.
The signing took place in Athens in the presence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
Transit will be provided jointly by the transmission system operators of Greece, Bulgaria, Romania and Moldova.
The statement said that Zelenskyy thanked Greece for its principled and tangible support for Ukraine’s defence in this war, for supporting our people, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence.
“Our agreements with Greece today are an important part of the large energy package we have prepared for this winter to ensure gas supplies to Ukraine. I want to thank you once again, my dear friend. I thank your team and the companies for making this possible,” Zelenskyy said.
The document was signed by chairman of the board of Naftogaz of Ukraine Sergii Koretskyi and CEO of the Greek state company DEPA Commercial Konstantinos Xifaras.
Zelenskyy and Mitsotakis discussed long-term arrangements – receiving natural gas from the United States through Greece.
Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to the United States and to President Donald Trump for this opportunity, the statement said.
“This way, Ukraine gains access to reliable sources of energy. And Greece becomes a hub for supplying American liquefied natural gas to Central and Eastern Europe,” Mitsotakis said.
“This makes a decisive contribution to the energy stability, resilience, and security not only of our region, but of yours as well. Undoubtedly, this is the path toward independence from Russian gas, and Europe will stop buying Russian gas,” he said.
Zelenskyy also provided an update on the situation at the front, outlining the prospects and opportunities for intensifying diplomacy and helping bring the war closer to an end.
“The key is continued pressure on Russia, which started this war and is doing everything to prolong it, “Zelenskyy said.
“Only this year, there have already been dozens of opportunities for a ceasefire and for more meaningful steps to guarantee security, but all such peace proposals were spurned by Russia. This is precisely why it deserves further sanctions, and this is why it deserves further pressure,” he said.
