Thousands sign petition urging Bulgaria to take ‘clear and unambiguous’ position backing Ukraine
In just a few hours on March 5, thousands of Bulgarians have signed a petition, initiated by public figures, calling on Parliament, the President and the Cabinet to take a “clear and unambiguous” position in support of Ukraine.
The petition calls on the three institutions to support all international sanctions against the Russian aggressor, and to work actively with all European and other partners to establish and guarantee a just peace in Ukraine.
Initially, the petition had 168 signatures, including those of well-known historians, writers, directors, actors, artists, political scientists, economists, journalists, doctors, playwrights, lawyers and composers.
The full text states:
“We, the undersigned, stand firmly behind the Ukrainian people in their struggle for territorial integrity and sovereignty.
Today, when Ukraine has been withstanding the military aggression of the Russian Federation for more than 3 years, we consider it our moral and patriotic duty to raise our voice in defense of life, freedom, and universal human values, to stand with Ukraine and Europe at this critical historical hour.
Just as at the very beginning of the war we resolutely condemned the Russian invasion and all military actions directed against the independent and sovereign state, so today we stand behind Ukraine’s right to receive a just peace and guarantees for its independence.
Russia’s actions threaten not only the existence of Ukraine as a self-determining state, but also the entire Europe, based on rules and mutual respect.
Our historical and cultural proximity to the Ukrainian people, as well as the proximity of our interests and national security, oblige us to be among the most active defenders of their inherent right to freedom and independence.
Our similar recent history, passed under the totalitarian shadow of the hammer and sickle, gives us reason to believe that we should be part of the decision about Ukraine’s future in Europe, and not soulless observers of its barbaric destruction. Russia wants to replace the rule of law with the right of force and impose its model, where the tsar is the law, instead of the law reigns.
In the name of the dignity of Bulgaria today and the peaceful future of our children, we call on the Bulgarian National Assembly, the President of the Republic of Bulgaria and the Council of Ministers:
1. to take a clear and unambiguous position in support of Ukraine;
2. to support all international sanctions against the Russian aggressor;
3. to work actively with all European and other partners to establish and guarantee a just peace in Ukraine.
We encourage the Bulgarian media not to back down from their duty to the truth and not to allow themselves to be turned into a tool of disinformation.
History will remember the courage of Ukrainians to defend justice, freedom, and their human dignity in times of trial.
We call on all Bulgarians to show sympathy for the Ukrainian people and support their efforts to restore a just and lasting peace.”
