Platform offers virtual conversations in English with survivors of Bulgaria’s communist-era detention camps
Sofia Platform, a Bulgarian NGO with an an extensive track record in projects dealing with the remembrance of the communist past, has added a feature enabling virtual conversations in English with survivors of the country’s communist-era detention camps.
This will allow a broader audience to learn history directly from those who lived it, Sofia Platform said in a Facebook post.
“On https://belene.camp/en/, you can have a virtual conversation in English with three more survivors,” it said.
The virtual conversations are available in English thanks to collaboration with Gedenkstätte Berlin-Hohenschönhausen, with the support of Bundesstiftung zur Aufarbeitung der SED-Diktatur.
“Special thanks to the translators Sophia Kleinsasser, Tom Edward Phillips and Christopher Buxton,” Sofia Platform said.
The virtual conversations were created with the support of America for Bulgaria as part of the Histories from Belene project.
Over the past 10 years, Sofia Platform has worked with hundreds of experts, trained thousands of teachers in certified training sessions, worked with thousands of students in more than 100 locations across Bulgaria.
From publishing teaching materials, to developing audio-visual tools and testing them in practice, Sofia Platform has become a lead innovator and support organization for formal and non-formal history and civic educators in Bulgaria, it said on its website.
Following the successful completion of the first Histories from Belene project (2022–2024), its continuation will broaden its scope and activities.
The new phase of the project is being carried out from 2025 to 2027 by the foundation.
