Bulgaria extends Code Orange weather warnings over forecast heavy rain, snow

Bulgaria’s meteorological bureau has issued the Code Orange warning of dangerous weather for five districts for December 1 because of forecast heavy rain and snow, while several other districts are subject to the lesser Code Yellow warning because of forecast heavy rain.

The districts subject to the Code Orange are Blagoevgrad, Smolyan, Plovdiv, Kurdzhali and Haskovo. Code Yellow warnings of potentially dangerous weather were issued for the district (not city) of Sofia, Kyustendil and Pazardzhik.

The remaining districts are classified Code Green, meaning that no weather warning is in place.

Precipitation will be significant throughout south-western Bulgaria, the bureau said, with snow prevalent at higher altitudes, above 1000m.

Rainfall has been forecast at up to 35mm in the areas subject to Code Yellow and in the 40mm to 50mm range in areas under the Code Orange warning.

Maximum temperatures will be between three and 12 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature in Sofia will be about 4C.

The Road Infrastructure Agency appealed on November 29 to motorists who have a journey ahead of them in the coming days to travel with cars prepared for winter conditions.
