Employees on labour contract in Bulgaria fell close to 5% in June 2020 y/y – NSI
The number of employees on labour contract in Bulgaria was 4.7 per cent lower in June 2020 than in June 2019, the National Statistical Institute (NSI) said on August 12.
This represented a drop of 111 500 people.
The largest decrease was in the accommodation and food services sector, 48 800 people, about 35 per cent of the total decrease.
This was followed by the manufacturing sector, with 31 000 fewer people on labour contracts.
The highest increase in labour contracts between June 2019 and June 2020 was in the IT sector, 6000, the NSI said.
Comparing the end of June 2020 with the end of March this year – the latter the month in which Bulgaria declared a State of Emergency because of the Covid-19 pandemic – the number of employees on labour contracts was one per cent lower, representing a decrease of 23 500 people.
In that time, the largest reduction in employees on labour contracts was in the arts, entertainment and recreation sector, by 4.5 per cent, as theatres and other places of entertainment were closed under State of Emergency orders.
The NSI said that the average monthly salary of an employee on labour contract was 1323 leva in April, 1333 leva in May and 1355 leva in June.
In the second quarter of 2020, the highest salaries were in the IT sector, 3270 leva a month, and the lowest in the accommodation and food service activities sector, 647 leva.
