Number of migrant and refugee arrivals in Europe in 2015 approaches million mark
A total of 985 312 migrants, including refugees, have arrived in Europe since January 2015, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
This number includes 924 127 who arrived by sea. The number of drowned or missing was 3671.
In an update on arrivals of migrants and refugees between December 2 and 9, IOM said that 26 856 had arrived in Greece, an increase of 11 per cent in comparison to the previous week. In all, 803 232 people had arrived since January 2015.
In the Republic of Macedonia, 26 026 migrants and refugees had arrived in the past week, an increase of 77 per cent over the previous week. Overall, 321 759 had arrived since June 2015.
In Serbia, there were 19 308 newly-arrived migrants and refugees, a decrease of 14 per cent in comparison to the previous week. Since January 2015, there had been 506 127 arrivals.
In Croatia, there were 23 480 newly-arrived migrants and refugees; half the number of the previous week. Overall, 486 326 arrived since September 2015.
In Slovenia, there were 23 491 newly-arrived migrants and refugees, a decrease of 31.7 per cent in comparison to arrivals in the previous week. Overall, 309 217 had arrived since October 2015.
Hungary had 62 newly-registered arrivals of migrants and refugees, a decrease of 5.1 per cent in comparison to registered arrivals in the previous week; overall 391 202 arrived since January 2015.
In Austria, there were 21 839 newly arrived migrants and refugees, 16.6 per cent more than the previous week. Overall, 296 289 arrived since October 2015.
In Italy, there were 5126 newly registered arrivals of migrants and refugees; representing an increase of 1,123 per cent in comparison to arrivals in the previous week; overall 148 240 arrived since January 2015.
