What’s On: ‘Opera Open’ in Plovdiv from June 17 to July 20

Plovdiv State Opera is to present “Opera Open”, a programme of seven performances, from June 17 to July 20 2014 at the Ancient Theatre in Bulgaria’s second city.

The programme is linked to the 31st traditional Verdi Nights in Plovdiv, which in 2014 will be expanded with a strong presence of international performers and the inclusion of works by composers such as Wagner, Chopin and Gershwin.

Foreign performers are to include Chinese soprao Hui He, direct from the Arena di Verona, Georgian bass Paata Burchuladze and soloist Elisabet Strid.

The programme is:

June 17: Carmina Burana by Carl Orff
June 21: Gala Concert starring Paata Burchuladze, celebrating 100 years since the birth of Boris Christoff
June 24: Gershin/Chopin featuring Sofia’s National Opera and Ballet
June 28: Verdi’s La Traviata, with the choir and orchestra of the State Opera Stara Zagora and State Opera Plovdiv
July 5: Verdi’s Don Carlos
July 12: Wagner – Ride of the Valkyries, starring Elisabet Strid, celebrating 200 years of Richard Wagner
July 20: Verdi’s Aida, starring Hui He
